My Life Function

2020

In a scene in a Soviet sci-fi film ‘Through the Thorns to the Stars’ (Viktorov, 1981), a middle-aged female scientist is told that her main problem is childlessness. She replies: “My life function does not include motherhood.” One of the women I interviewed on being childfree called this phrase her motto, which helped her to identify that having children can be optional.

For this work, I decided to use again one of the designs my mother created while she was working as a designer at a textile mill. The pattern, which resembles with stars, became a background to the motto. I decided to make it more inclusive by using a word ‘parenthood’ instead of ‘motherhood’ and by printing it on a T-shirt, a garment worn by the whole world.
